Passports: Interior Ministry Deploys Contactless Solution For Biometric Capture - Politics

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo @BTOofficial

Beloved Nigerians,

In fulfillment of our promise to deploy a contactless solution for biometric capture, I am pleased to announce that this vision has finally become a reality.

Yesterday, I hosted a cross-section of stakeholders – including top government officials, civil society organizations, media representatives, and tech experts – to preview the @nigimmigration's innovative contactless biometric capture passport application.

This cutting-edge technology enhances the passport acquisition process by allowing eligible applicants to initiate and complete their applications seamlessly from the comfort of their homes or workplaces on their mobile devices. The new feature is undoubtedly a game-changer, and we are eager to fully roll it out in our new passport regime. Our goal remains to transform our systems and methods to align with global best practices, setting the pace for other nations to follow without compromising national security.

After previewing this solution with these stakeholders, we will incorporate their feedback to refine the system. In the coming days, we plan to first launch this service for Nigerians in the diaspora.

As a nation, we are setting new records, and it brings me great joy to see @officialABAT's efforts bear fruit.

I would also like to thank all the stakeholders who made history with us yesterday, including @DrJoeAbah; the representative of the DG, NiDCOM, Dr. @abikedabiri; the representative of (@UNmigration), Emiola Joy; Gbenga Aruleba; @seunokin; Soni Daniel; Victor Azu; Salihu Tanko Yakasai (@dawisu); Oluwaseyi Ayeni; @otegaogra; Dr. Segun Awosanya (@segalink); Dr. @PaulAlaje; Engr. @omotayoakeem; Rotimi Akinniyi; Precious Ogbuenyi; Jesupemi Are; @icpcnigeria representative, Dr. Awogbemi Olanrewaju; and @officialEFCC representative, Mr. Clement Okoh.

Together, we are making history, and I look forward to what we will achieve in the days ahead.

I was privileged to be at the test run of the contactless passport application system by @BTOofficial & @nigimmigration today. When ready, over 18s RENEWING passports can capture their biometrics themselves at home. Passport delivered to your home! 👏🏽👏🏽

Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining a select group of stakeholders, including my brothers @DrJoeAbah and @otegaogra, at an exclusive event hosted by the Honorable Minister of Interior @BTOofficial and the Comptroller General of @nigimmigration. We previewed the innovative contactless biometric capture application process for passport renewal.

Initially, I had several questions: How would the app capture fingerprints? How smooth would the process be? Most importantly, how secure would it be? However, by the end of the presentation, all my concerns were addressed. The application process proved efficient, fast, and remarkably user-friendly.

For Nigerians above 18 years old with expired international passports and no data changes, this app revolutionizes passport renewal. You can now apply from the comfort of your home using your mobile phone or laptop, eliminating the need for biometric capture at immigration offices. This innovation is particularly beneficial for Nigerians abroad, who previously had to travel long distances to embassies, incurring significant time and financial costs.

The app allows you to fill out the application form and upload the required documents, pay applicable fees, verify your National Identification Number (NIN) and then wait for application vetting, and approval

Once approved, your passport will be processed without requiring physical presence for biometrics unless it's a fresh application.

I was also impressed by the optional courier delivery service (for a fee), saving time and effort.

Beyond passport services, I discovered the Ministry of Interior's expansive responsibilities. Notably, they've established Nigeria's largest data center, surpassing that of Galaxy. Additionally, their efforts in border control and migration management are commendable.

The Ministry's achievements within one year are remarkable:

- Enhanced border security measures
- Improved data infrastructure
- Streamlined passport renewal process

Thank you, Honorable Minister @BTOofficial, for the invitation. Your dedication to innovation and citizen convenience is truly appreciated. Keep up the excellent work!
